The term was invented to cover software. Though, I guess it is applicable here as well.

I admit it's not the most

I admit it's not the most appropriate term but it's the closest there is to allowing usage of something. I guess I should have worded the poll better.

Open source images? I never really heard them referred to in that way.

I don't use them at all. They don't seem to help, as everything is done for you. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me!

Open Source is where artists

Open Source is where artists allow you to use selected pieces of their work, either for learning purposes or for use in your own work. Often these items are covered by a Creative Commons license to make things easier copyright wise.
